HPB Viehhofen: Lengau & Hinterglemm

A very attractive easy linear walk, generally along the valley bottom, close to the R. Saalach, but with two small deviations which add variety.

The return to Lengau is either by the same route or by using the valley bus (generally an hourly service) from stop no. 17.

Lengau is nothing more than a hamlet perched on the valley side, but Hinterglemm is a large village, well provided with visitor facilities, including cafes, bars and shops.

WALK

From the terminus of the ‘Noddy’ train walk back along the roadside to the Lengauerhof  Hotel and the bus terminus/turning circle. Lengau hamlet is across a field to the left. Close on the left is a tiny chapel in a field.

1. Turn right to cross a wooden bridge, signposted ‘Hinterglemm 3, Promenade 3’ and follow a gravel track, with the river close on the left, but soon bearing right and rising to cross a bridge over a tributary stream; there are views to the head of the valley. Pass the confluence and go through a little gate to reach a bridge. Do not cross; the path is now narrower, close to the river. After a sharp little rise go over a stile and continue. Cross a farm track and rise again, across the lower edge of meadows and into woodland. Cross a tiny stream and go through another wooden stile, for a short distance well above the valley road, but soon descending. Pass the end of another bridge, now on a more conventional riverside track. Go under the cables of a ski lift and join the valley road by the ski lift buildings.

2. Cross the road and the river, turning left for 30m, then sharp right across the parking area of the ski terminal, before continuing along the track, now with the river on the right. Pass another bridge, then a sports area to the right. Pass the Reitplatz, a small horse riding establishment, before reaching the fringe of Hinterglemm by the Forellenhof Hotel.

3. Immediately before the hotel, turn right to cross a bridge over the river and join the valley road. Turn left to walk along the roadside towards the centre of Hinterglemm (for the quickest return to Lengau without visiting Hinterglemm wait at the bus stop 17, well before the right fork which leads to the village centre). Otherwise continue almost to the mouth of the tunnel before forking right, along the main street of the village.
