HPB Viehhofen: Kaprun & the River Salzach

A very gentle circular walk on the area of flat farming land which separates Kaprun from the R, Saalach, all on good tracks. The views to Kaprun Castle and the mountains are excellent, with the Kitzsteinhorn supreme.

A very gentle circular walk on the area of flat farming land which separates Kaprun from the R, Saalach, all on good tracks. The views to Kaprun Castle and the mountains are excellent, with the Kitzsteinhorn supreme.

Kaprun is an important centre for winter sports, an attractive little worn which remains appealing to visitors throughout the summer, with a range of shops, cafés and other facilities.

WALK

From the car park cross the main road, then cross a bridge over the Kapruner Ache, a tributary of the R. Saalach. Pass the Bauhof Gemeinde Kaprun (Council Works Department) on the left.

1. Turn left to follow a very minor road through a trading estate. The fire station is to the right. On leaving the developed area the route continues as a tarmac roadway beside the tributary river. Go across the road (that leads on the right to the Tauern Spa) on to the tarmac pathway signposted ‘Saugstelle’.

2. At a small parking area on the left follow a gravel footpath to the left, where there is a ‘Salzachau Weg 14’ sign. Reach the confluence of the rivers in 50m and continue along the excellent riverside path, with plenty of shade and a few seats along the way. Kaprun Castle is in view some distance to the right. Pass a small industrial building on the right. In a little more than 200m reach a signposted junction.

3. Turn right to follow ‘Brunnwienn Weg 16’. This is a broad, unsurfaced roadway through the farming land, heading for Kaprun, with the castle now quite dominant to the left. Ignore any tracks to right or left.

4. Reach the edge of Kaprun at a busy cycle track. Turn right to take the grass path beside the cycle track, directly back to the fire station, the bridge and the main road. Cross the road to return to the car park.
