Kaiserlift cable car station in Kufstein

Church Square (Kirchplatz) in Scheffau

0.00 km  - Start at the Kaiserlift cable car station. With the station behind you, go STRAIGHT ON downhill (signs for Brentenjochalm)

0.50 km – At the junction, follow the main path STRAIGHT ON (signs for trail 814 to Kaindlhütte)

Warning: After approximately one kilometre, you need to navigate across two streams that run over the path from the right. Take care if it is slippery in poor weather conditions.

1.80 km – TURN RIGHT at the junction (814 towards Kaindlhütte) and follow the path along the stream.

2.00 km – Cross the small wooden bridge over the stream ON THE RIGHT and then climb the steep uphill path sloping TO THE LEFT.

2.10 km – At the lodges, cross the larger main path and continue STRAIGHT ON along the trail across the field (814 towards Kaindlhütte) until you reach the main path again. Continue following the signs for Adlerweg/814 towards Kaindlhütte.

2.90 km – You will now pass the Kaindlhütte (refreshment option) and shortly afterwards, a small chapel. At the next junction, go STRAIGHT AHEAD and continue on the Adlerweg (towards Hoheck/Lake Hintersteiner)

3.20 km – Follow the Adlerweg, which branches off the main trail here as a narrow path behind the fence ON THE LEFT. Keep following the path towards the Hoheck summit cross.

4.20 km – At the Hoheck summit cross, you will reach the highest point of the day (1470 m)

-- the short detour up to the cross and the viewpoint is worth the effort. You can take a well-earned rest here.

4.20 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON along the Adlerweg through the turnstile and keep walking uphill. Then take a slight RIGHT, then sharp LEFT, then STRAIGHT ON through a wooded area and across the fields.

5.70 km – You will now see the buildings at Wälleralm (refreshment option). Keep right and take the gravel path up the pasture to the RIGHT of the buildings.

6.10 km – Past the small summit cross to the right,  the slope continues downhill.

6.40 km – At the ‘Im Sattel’ junction (signpost), continue following the track (#45) STRAIGHT ON downhill towards Lake Hintersteiner. Continue to follow the signs for trail 45.

9.20 km – At the small village of Seespitz, the trail joins a paved road. TURN LEFT here and pass the large barn on the left. You will now see Lake Hintersteiner in front of you. After the last house, walk a few metres along the street towards the lake and then TURN RIGHT at the signpost for Schiestl Ost.

9.60 km – At the junction for Lake West, go through the gate and then TURN LEFT towards the lake.

Keep going STRAIGHT ON until you reach the lakeside. Keep walking STRAIGHT ON along the shore, with the lake to your left. Ignore any trails leading to the right.

11.30 km  - The trail moves away from the lake at this point and you will reach a fork in the path. TURN RIGHT here, away from the lake.

11.50 km – After a short time, the trail joins a paved road in the village of Grediern. Follow this for a short distance uphill around the bend. At the next yellow signpost, TURN LEFT between the houses towards Café Rosemarie.

11.90 km - See photo– The path bends to the left here. Keep STRAIGHT AHEAD across the field towards the forest and follow the forest trail downhill towards Scheffau/Café Rosemarie.

Keep following the signs for trail 44 towards Scheffau/Rosemarie.

12.60 km – Shortly behind the wooded area, the trail joins a paved road near a few farm buildings. Follow it TO THE LEFT as it winds downhill (still 44 Scheffau).

13.50 km – The road leads to the village of Seebach. Continue following the road and ignore the paths leading off it in the village.

14.10 km – The road forks at a stream. TURN RIGHT between the houses to Café Rosemarie.

14.20 km – Leave the road opposite the café and TURN LEFT on the gravel track towards Scheffau. Take this track to cross the stream and climb the two winding paths uphill. Keep walking STRAIGHT AHEAD and follow the trail, which soon becomes paved again, towards Scheffau. This way, you will always have a view of the Kaiser mountains on your left.

15.50 km – Shortly after you enter Scheffau, you will reach your destination at the church square. If you are staying in Gasthof Zum Wilden Kaiser, continue south on the main street for about 1km to reach your hotel. If you reach the main road Loferer Strasse (E641) you have gone too far.

Kufstein Fortress

First documented in 1205 as a possession of the Bavarian Duke Ludwig and the Bishop of Regensburg, Kufstein Fortress is today one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Tyrolean lowlands. A series of 21 information boards will guide you round this impressive open-air complex and its fortifications, including the Elisabeth battery with its vast cannons, as well as the castle courtyard known as the “Schlossrondell”.

A delightful 20-minute journey on the nostalgic Kaiserlift chair-lift takes you up to the Brentenjoch top station at 1,200 metres. More information can be found here.

Covering 56 hectares and reaching a depth of up to 36 metres, Hintersteiner Lake is one of the cleanest and most beautiful mountain lakes in Tyrol, making it the perfect spot for a quick cooling dip. A small bathing lido and café on the south bank are open from the beginning of May to the end of September, weather permitting. A number of small gravel islands along the hiking trail provide an ideal jumping-off point into the cool water.

In fine weather:  Take swimwear and a towel if you fancy a refreshing dip in Lake Hintersteiner.

Always wear good walking boots with a robust sole, and take waterproofs with you. Take plenty of water with you (min. 1 litre) and don’t forget sunscreen!

Today you may be walking past a few different areas where cows graze. Although generally very docile and used to walkers, keep your distance and never turn your back on a cow that is behaving strangely or aggressive. Be particularly vigilant around cows with calves.

Always allow plenty of time for your hike. The specified walking times only refer to actual time spent walking. Breaks for photos and a rest need to be added to the specified times.

Make sure you find out about current weather conditions and keep an eye on weather changes. Thunderstorms can gather very quickly in the Alps.

Do not leave the designated hiking trails!
