N126Have you heard of American gangsters, such as Al Capone, Baby Face Nelson or Bonnie and Clyde from Hollywood movies about the "Roaring Twenties"?  They were part fantasy, but based upon fact.  From 1920 to 1933 the production, importation, transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages were prohibited throughout the United States.  This led to a new era of crime and corruption on all levels of society.  The Prohibition years also witnessed important changes in American culture:  migration, music, religious fundamentalism, women’s emancipation and racism.  During this lecture and discussion, you will learn about the Prohibition law, how it changed America and such concepts as bootleggers, speakeasies, flappers and all that jazz!
